Transit Lounge Gallery

The proposed project is to develop a gallery space in the Transit Lounge office room.  The gallery space will essentially be confined to the corner of the offices, and will become an experimental development space for young and emerging artists to develop skills in exhibiting work and curating.  This space will be entirely managed by the Hartcoat contemporary artist organization, and will be rotated on a monthly basis.

This partnership will benefit Hartcoat, as it will offer us the opportunity to manage a contemporary minded space that will give emerging artists involved with Hartcoat more avenues to explore when exhibiting work.  Managing the Transit Lounge space will also introduce Hartcoat into a greater network of artist organizations, expose us to a wider audience and start a fruitful dialog between us and Transit Lounge.

Primarily, those that will benefit from this partnership are those directly involved with our organization (members and other artist run groups), but as one of Hartcoat’s primary goals is to approach emerging Brisbane artists and offer support, others that will benefit from this partnership will potentially be practicing artists exhibiting in Brisbane in an amateur or experimental capacity.

Others that will benefit from this undertaking include:

  1. Contemporary youth and emerging artists involved with Hartcoat
  2. Burgeoning local organizations involved with Hartcoat
  3. Students and University Lecturers
  4. Young and emerging Curators in Brisbane and Australia

This project is will also be relevant to the goals and aims of Transit Lounge, as I believe our two organizations fight for a very similar cause.

  1. Hartcoat’s main objectives are to support emerging contemporary artists in exhibiting work and putting on shows around Brisbane.
  2. The goals of Transit Lounge as detailed on the website state that Transit Lounge offers “resources, professional development workshops, networking and showcasing opportunities for young people aged 15 to 25.”

The proposal for this gallery space is a natural progression for this exact cause, as it will create a developmental area for the showcasing of young artists.

The period of time Hartcoat wishes to run this project for would ideally be from October 16th 2007 – April 16th 2008 for a period of 6 months, with future involvement possible.

There are a number of other organizations partnered with Hartcoat that could contribute to this project, including: The Agreeable Kids Social Club, Audio Pollen Social Club, FluxHaus artist group, the Queensland Academy for Creative Industries and QUT’s Visual Arts department Kelvin Grove.

Hartcoat will acknowledge Transit Lounge by giving prime advertising space on the Hartcoat website (www.hartcoat.com), the printing of YAQ and Transit Lounge logos on our catalogues for external exhibitions and the forwarding of opportunities for other Transit Lounge partners to get involved with our future events.
